Gear Tracker: Know when to replace your bike components
Ride Cave's Gear Tracker helps you stay on top of component wear by estimating replacement dates based on your ride volume. Track chains, cassettes, tires, brake pads, and more across all your bikes.
More than a virtual riding app
Ride Cave started as an indoor cycling platform—a place to connect your smart trainer, ride virtual tracks, and follow structured workouts. But from the beginning, the vision has been broader than that. Competitive cycling demands more than just fitness. It demands preparation, planning, and attention to the equipment that carries you through every ride. That's why we've been building out a Tools section with features designed to support every aspect of your cycling life.
The Gear Tracker is the latest addition to that toolkit. It sits alongside Atlas (your AI training coach) and the Workout Builder in the Tools section, and it tackles a problem every serious cyclist faces: knowing when your components are due for replacement.
The problem with bike maintenance
Most cyclists know they should replace their chain regularly. Fewer remember exactly when they installed the current one. Even fewer track wear across their cassette, brake pads, bar tape, bottom bracket, and all the other consumable parts on a road or gravel bike.
The usual approach is to wait until something feels off—shifting gets sloppy, braking power fades, or a mechanic points it out during a service. By then, a worn chain may have already damaged your cassette and chainrings, turning a $30 replacement into a $200 one. Worn brake pads can compromise safety. Running tires past their lifespan increases the risk of flats at the worst possible time.
The information you need to stay ahead of wear is straightforward: what's installed, when it was installed, and how much you ride. The Gear Tracker connects these three pieces to give you a clear picture of where every component stands.
How it works
The Gear Tracker lives in the Tools section of Ride Cave. Open it and you'll see your bikes listed as cards, each with a unique color accent so you can tell them apart at a glance. Select a bike and you'll see all the gear you've logged for it, organized in a table showing component type, install date, estimated replacement date, and current status.
Adding a new component is simple. Click Add Gear, choose the gear type (chain, cassette, chainring, tires, brake pads, brake rotors, cables and housing, bar tape, bottom bracket, or a custom type), set the install date, and adjust the ride volume slider to match how much you ride.
The ride volume slider is the key input. It maps to an annual mileage estimate ranging from about 500 miles per year (light riding) to 10,000 miles per year (heavy training). As you move the slider, the estimated replacement date updates in real time. A chain on a bike ridden 5,000 miles per year will need replacing much sooner than the same chain on a bike ridden 1,500 miles per year.
Mileage-based lifespan estimates
Every component type in the Gear Tracker has a mileage lifespan range based on typical wear patterns. These aren't arbitrary numbers—they reflect real-world durability under varying conditions:
Chain: 2,000–4,000 miles. Chains stretch over time and accelerate wear on your cassette and chainrings if not replaced. Riding in wet or dirty conditions shortens this range.
Cassette: 5,000–10,000 miles. Cassettes last longer than chains but wear faster when paired with a stretched chain. Replacing your chain on time extends cassette life significantly.
Chainring: 10,000–20,000 miles. Chainrings are durable but eventually wear down, especially the teeth on your most-used ring.
Tires: 2,000–5,000 miles. Highly variable depending on tire compound, road surface, rider weight, and cornering habits. Racing tires wear faster; training tires last longer.
Brake Pads: 1,000–3,000 miles. Disc brake pads in particular can wear quickly in hilly terrain or wet conditions. This is the component most likely to need frequent replacement.
Brake Rotors: 8,000–15,000 miles. Rotors last much longer than pads but do eventually thin past the minimum safe thickness.
Cables & Housing: 3,000–6,000 miles. Shift and brake cables degrade over time, especially at friction points inside the housing. Fresh cables make a noticeable difference in shifting precision.
Bar Tape: 2,000–5,000 miles. More of a comfort and grip consideration than a safety one, but worn bar tape is a sign of a neglected cockpit.
Bottom Bracket: 10,000–20,000 miles. When your bottom bracket starts creaking or developing play, it's time. Sealed cartridge bearings last longer; press-fit designs may need attention sooner.
The Gear Tracker uses the midpoint of each range as its baseline estimate, then adjusts the timeline based on your ride volume. The result is a specific month and year when each component is projected to need replacement.
The Gear Lifespan Chart
When you're adding or editing a component, you'll see a Gear chart link next to the replacement date estimate. Clicking it opens a visual chart that shows every component type side by side, with horizontal bars representing their mileage lifespan ranges.
The chart scales to your ride volume setting, so you can see at a glance which components will need attention soonest and which ones last the longest. It's a useful reference when planning a service visit or deciding whether to buy parts in advance.
Multi-bike support
If you own multiple bikes—a road bike and a gravel bike, for example—each one gets its own gear list. The bike cards on the main Gear Tracker page show each bike with a unique color accent, making it easy to switch between them. Components are tracked independently per bike, because your road bike's chain wear has nothing to do with your gravel bike's.
Each bike card also shows a quick summary of how many components are currently tracked and whether any are due for replacement, so you can spot issues without drilling into each bike individually.
Status tracking
Every component in the gear table shows a status badge: OK or Due. The status is calculated automatically based on the install date, ride volume, and the component's lifespan range. When a component crosses its estimated replacement date, the status flips to Due, giving you a clear signal that it's time to act.
When you do replace a component, you can mark it as fresh—resetting its install date to today and restarting the wear clock. Or you can edit the entry to update the install date to whenever the replacement actually happened.
Custom gear types
Not every component fits neatly into the predefined categories. If you want to track pedals, cleats, handlebar grips, or anything else, choose Other as the gear type and give it a custom name. Custom types don't have built-in lifespan estimates (since the range varies too much), but you can still record install dates and notes to keep a maintenance log.

Cycling is a gear-intensive sport. The difference between a good race and a mechanical DNF can come down to a worn chain or glazed brake pads. Staying on top of component wear isn't glamorous, but it's the kind of discipline that separates prepared athletes from the rest.
Getting started
Head to the Tools tab in Ride Cave and open the Gear Tracker. Add your bikes if you haven't already, then start logging your components. Even if you don't know the exact install dates, your best estimate gives the tracker a useful starting point. As you replace components going forward, the data gets more precise.
