Plan Templates: reuse plans and share with friends
Create reusable training plan templates and share them publicly. Riders get dependable recurring programs, groups can follow the same regiment, and coaches can distribute plans to their athletes.
Training plans, built to share and reuse
Since launching Training Plans earlier this month, riders have been creating structured multi-week programs to guide their training. Today we're introducing Plan Templates—a way to turn any training plan into a reusable blueprint that you or anyone else can clone, customize, and ride.
Templates solve a real problem. A training plan is tied to specific dates and a specific FTP. If you want to repeat a plan next season, share it with a friend, or hand it off to an athlete you coach, the original plan doesn't transfer cleanly. Templates strip away the personal details and preserve the structure, so the plan works for anyone who picks it up.
How templates work
Any plan you've created can become a template. Open the plan, click Make Template, give it a name and description, and optionally check Make public to list it in the Discover tab. The original plan stays exactly as it was—the template is a separate copy that serves as a blueprint.
Templates look different from regular plans. They don't show specific dates, progress bars, or completion checkmarks. Instead they display the plan structure: weeks, phases, workout types, and training load. The focus is on what the plan contains, not when it runs.
When someone clones a template, they pick a start date and the system recalculates every workout date automatically. Their current FTP is applied to the cloned plan so power targets match their fitness level. The result is a fully personalized plan ready to activate.
Public templates and the Discover tab
If you mark a template as public, it appears in the Discover tab where any Ride Cave user can browse it. Public templates show the author's username, discipline, duration, weekly hours, and training load so riders can quickly evaluate whether a plan fits their goals.
You can star public templates to save them for later and clone them when you're ready to start. Each template tracks how many times it's been starred and cloned, giving the community a signal for which plans are popular and well-regarded.
Users who aren't signed in can still browse public templates. They'll see a Sign Up to Clone button instead of the clone option, making it easy to get started when they find a plan they like.
For riders who want consistency
If you've built a training plan that worked well—a base-building block, a race prep cycle, a recovery phase—you probably want to use it again. Templates make that simple. Create it once, clone it whenever you need it, and adjust the start date to fit your schedule.
This is especially useful for seasonal training. A 12-week base plan you ran last winter can become a template you clone every October. The structure stays the same; only the dates and FTP change. No rebuilding from scratch each year.
For groups and clubs
Cycling clubs, group rides, and teams often want their members training on similar programs. A public template lets everyone in the group clone the same plan and follow the same weekly structure, even though each person's dates and power targets are individualized.
Share a link to your public template and anyone with a Ride Cave account can clone it in a few clicks. It's a straightforward way to coordinate group training without managing spreadsheets or sending workout files back and forth.
For coaches
If you coach athletes, templates give you a distribution mechanism for training programs. Build a plan that reflects your coaching methodology—periodization, workout selection, weekly volume—then publish it as a template. Your athletes clone it, get their own personalized copy with correct dates and FTP-scaled targets, and you don't have to manually build each person's plan from scratch.
This works today for public templates that any user can discover. We're building toward something more targeted: the ability to share templates with specific people. Soon you'll be able to send a template directly to an athlete or a small group without making it public to everyone. That feature is coming shortly and will make coach-to-athlete plan delivery even more seamless.
What's next
Plan Templates are live now. You can create templates from any existing plan, browse public templates in the Discover tab, and clone them to start training immediately.
Coming soon: private template sharing with specific users, template versioning so you can update a template and notify cloners, and deeper integration with Atlas for AI-generated templates tailored to individual goals.
Head to the Discover tab to browse what the community has shared, or open one of your plans and hit Make Template to contribute your own. If you have feedback, let us know through our feedback form.
